first off, I don't know why floor mats are come as carpet. They color dirt and muck, then they get a hole worn in them at the heel point.

Kinja'd!!!

So do you have floor mats and if they're rubber what type? Every search I've checked online says they smell like rubber ass - something I'm trying to avoid. Weathertech has "custom" mats but they look to be about $100.. seems steep for two flaps of rubber. So let's get some input.

...but the carpeted mats are super comfy!

I've got the Weathertech ones in the front my wife's CX-9, and they're legit.

You could dump a gallon of milk in them and not get any on the carpet...

I think the idea is that the mat wears through instead of you carpet, then you just replace the mat instead of re-upholster your car. I personally don't like rubber mats, because they collect water, then your shoes don't dry out, and possibly slip off the clutch.

Anyway, the rubber smell should fade over time, and may smell more on really hot days.

In my 135is I have the factory carpeted floor mats. But I also don't drive it in the winter.

In my Grand Cherokee I have Rugged Ridge "rubber" (more like plastic) floor liners . They're trays that come up the side of the floor and trap all the snow and winter muck that comes off my boots. When spring comes around, just take em out and hose em off.

Kinja'd!!!

Since I bought it used and it didn't come with the factory mats, I'm just going to keep these in it year-round since it's only my DD in the winter anyway.

When I first got them they had a bit of a plastic smell but nothing major, and since then it has mostly gone away.

In my old Mazdaspeed 6, which I drove year round, I had the carpeted floor mats, and also the Mazda factory rubber mats. I switched them out when I switched between summer and winter tires. They weren't liners though, so sometimes melted snow would escape the sides.

Overall, I prefer the looks of carpeted mats, but they really don't stand up to Wisconsin winter. For a year-round car I recommend keeping the rubber mats, and ideally liners rather than plain mats, just for winter.

A full set of WeatherTechs (front row and second row) in Canada is usually around $220-230 for the Digitalfits, which are designed to perfectly fit a car. I don't know if they're worth it, but people keep ordering them.

Yep, exactly. Carpets are better so you can dry your soles off and have good traction. When they get dirty/grungy/worn you just swap them out with a new set.

My folks bought me a set of Weathertech mats for the 323 GTX. They are great and I love them.

I always go for genuine OEM carpets unless I'm asked for rubber ones. In fact I received a set of rubber mats for a neighbours Peugeot 207. They smelt a little of rubber (bit that's to be expected) but not overly so that it was offensive.

I find genuine ones last longer and cheaper 'tailored' ones are a false economy. If you look after them and clean them once a month or so they last a lot longer.

I literally have the exact floor mats pictured in my Taurus. They've worked pretty well. In the 'Vette, I just have the standard carpet ones it came with

"Good" rubber floor mats do tend to be pricey. Why are they pricey? Because every car has differently shaped footwells and retaining clips, and to make them fit right, it costs in R&D. Not only do they have to make popular sellers like Camrys and Accords, but they have to put the same amount of R&D into the BRZ and how it's slightly different from the Toyobaru or the other one.... (are they different?), then the Passat Wagon gets the same attention even though there are only like 30 of them sold... so making these things isn't as cheap as it seems. They all cost about $3.50 to make, so that $100 per set should really be $35 for Camrys and Accords, and $350 for everything else... (I'm making the numbers up, but you get the idea)

I'd pay that much for Wegu floormats like the ones that came in my Opel. I loved them, wish I could find a pair for my Mazda. Perfect fit, solid, simple waffle pattern. Plainly marked "links" and "rechts" for dummies. WeatherTech mats are nice but lack hipster cred. :)

Weathertech mats don't smell at all. Just make sure that the factory anchor points are in the right position and actually will anchor the mat down.

Quality pays off, trust me. The OEM ones may be decent, but usually not. Hint: Cadillac.

My ONLY advice is to spend the extra money to buy mats specifically designed for your year and model car.

The previous owner of my Viper had a set of "universal" rubber mats in the car that managed to slide just far enough forward to pin my gas pedal to the floor during a spirited drive. Thankfully the car is a manual and I was able to push the clutch in after accelerating for a few seconds up to about 80 mph.

For the Viper, I bought a nice set of Lloyd's carpet mats. For my beater I'm going to replace my worn oem mats with a set of rubber mats since I drive that car in all weather.

I have a set of OEM Ranger mats that the parts dept. found on the shelf at work. Gave em to me for free. Before those I had a set of mossy oak ones that just let all the much run right off so my carpets are absolutely trashed.

My parents got me cheap rubber floor mats with my university's logo on them. They work alright. I think I'm going to replace the carpet with vynil thought. It's only a regular cab truck so I'd like to be able to hose it out.

I just had to replace my driver's side rubber mat because I'd worn a hole through it from my heel. That's not a problem exclusive to the carpet ones.
